The tiled edge of an empty swimming pool is in the foreground and lower third of the painting, behind which a man leans on a boat railing dotted with lights. The sky behind is story.

Many of Smart’s works reveal an interest in the notion of travel, both real and metaphorical. Sometimes the actual carriers – trains, planes and boats – can only be partially seen in the painting. Sometimes they are not visible at all. Instead, Smart places the emphasis on waiting and stillness. In Luxury cruise, the fully dressed man in coat, shirt and tie appears to be heading to or from the office rather than relaxing on a holiday cruise. The deserted pool and bleak sky overhead seem anything but luxurious.
